Become A Writer In These 7 Steps

Have you always dreamed of having a career as a writer? You cannot imagine yourself doing anything else other than to write? Luckily for you, there is a successful way to become a writer or to simply improve your writing skills. Even though we all have the ability to write, not all of us know how to do it so good that it would bring us money and a respectful career. Before we go through steps of becoming a writer, first you have to ask yourself a few questions. What is writing for you? In what form of writing you’re very good at?  Do you know what other skills you need to posses in order to become a great writer? What are you expecting for yourself as a writer?

Writing is integrated almost in everything we do. From communicating on social media, essays in high schools and colleges, to creating a careers based on it. One way or another, we are writing something every day and our writing affects us and others in many ways.


#1 Writing starts with reading

Yes, you read it well – writing starts with reading. Don’t expect to become a high-quality writer if you haven’t been reading a lot. The more time you spent reading it will significantly raise the quality of your writing – from vocabulary to style. Not to mention that when you’re reading, you will get a lot of ideas what to think about and what to write about. Let’s just say that reading is the preparation phase for writing. If you’re not a fan of books, thy their alternative: audio books!


#2 Write today. Write tomorrow.

If you want to be great at something, you have to practice it every day. Don’t think about the limits, just practise. Write, write, write!  Whether it’s 10 short stories per week or one long article about a serious issue, the important thing is that you’re writing. If you write every day, it will become easier for you to express your thoughts into a meaningful piece of content. Not to mention you’ll enjoy the process of writing even more when you get used to it!


#3 Have a platform.

If you’re serious about writing, why not share your masterpiece online? It’s great to have all of your articles in one place if you wish to show somebody your writing style or just to grow an audience. The best way to do that is to start a blog. Decide which topic or topics you wish to cover with your writing and start publishing it online. There are so many ways of publishing and promoting what you wrote, it would be a shame not to try them out!


#4 Educate yourself.

Don’t think that after you’ve created your blog and started writing that you’re done with your education. It has just begun! Search for an online writing course that will help you bring out the best out of your writing. There is really an enormous choice of different courses for all types of writers. From introduction courses to those that are created for specific industry or specific writing style. You’ll even find a good list of free online courses!


#5 Get a review.

If you’re writing, you will want to know how to get better at it. Nobody’s perfect and it’s completely normal that you’ll have to improve some things while writing for you blog or any other platform. To get a good feedback, don’t ask your friends and family. Try to remember if you met someone who is a writer and ask if they get help you with your writing process. There are also some forums for writing critiques such as Location Rebel Academy, Writing Forums, etc. Any review can help you to improve your writing and enjoy the process of creating even more!


#6 Are you journaling?

A lot of successful writers are always emphasizing the importance of writing their own journal. It’s something that will help you organize your thoughts and prioritize your tasks. Organizing what you wish to write is almost as important as what you’re going to write. Your piece will never be fully understood if sentences are in a complete mess. Of course, having another way of practicing your writing will improve your written communication. Also, knowing that what you’re writing in your journal will not be published will make your feel relaxed and it can even awake the creativity in the writer!


#7 Be conversational.

The key to a great writing is being conversational and relaxed. Think about those who will be reading what you wrote. Make it easy for them to understand what you wanted to say. For example, someone who is reading your blog will not spend its time going through your posts if they can’t understand them due to complicated way you express your thoughts. This is why it’s so important to practice your writing because you’ll be able to compare how much has your writing has improved by using conversational tone. Writing and reading should feel like a conversation!



If you follow all these steps mentioned above, your writing will significantly be better as you stay consistent. Regardless the reason why you wish to become a writer, you will have to focus on the quality to succeed. There are a lot of writers out there – book authors, journalists, bloggers, content writers, public relations professionals, etc. This is why it’s crucial that you know what type of writer you want to become.
